Fierce sword play expected

Canterbury’s two topseeded men’s foilists, Steve Clarke, seven times the national champion, and Patrick Kell will once again be absent when the Canterbury provincial amateur fencing chamionships are held at Avonside Girls’s High school this week-end.

The Canterbury pair also missed the South Island championships in Christchurch three weeks ago. Clarke has work commitments and Kell is still recovering from a toe injury. The relatively even field that remains will be almost certainly vying for third place in the Canterbury men’s foil team, and competition is again expected to be close and fierce.

It is expected that the women’s event will be a little more clearcut with Jane Lindsay, of Christchurch, the

favourite. Likewise, Chris Nokes is tipped to take the epee title convincingly while Andrew Kell, aged 14, is looking to again upset the established sabreurs, Vic Manuge and Robert Bain.

Meanwhile the 16-strong Canterbury secondary schools team has been named and will train at the same venue on Sunday. The team is:

Benoit Upton, Andrew Kell, Matthew McCullough (Burnside High School); Nicholas Horridge, Colin Peebles, Andrew Robb, Aaron Kitto, Richard Hillock, Kurt Hinz (Christchurch 8.H.5.), Martin Taylor (Mairehau H.S.), Richard Bowles (Christ’s College), Edward Yee, Karita Avia (Linwood H.S.), Kathy Allen, Cara Thomas, Vivienne Clarke (Avonside G.H.S.).
