Dog fee going
NZPA-Reuter to London
The British Government said yesterday that it would abolish its 108-year-old licence fee for dogs, which now goes largely ignored.
After months of deliberation on the issue, the Environment Secretary, Mr Nicholas Ridley, told the House of Commons that legislation to abolish the licence would be submitted “when a suitable opportunity arises.”
The fee has remained fixed at 37 pence since 1878 , and costs more to collect than it provides in public revenue.
