Maori Language stall
Any efforts by pakehas to learn Maori language and culture is an important contribution to eliminate racism, according to a spokeswoman for the Waitangi Action and Learning Coalition, Ms Ruth Gray. “People who mispronounced Maori words or who make generalisations and racist statements usu-
ally do so out of ignorance,” she said. A stall will be held in Cathedral Square today to mark Maori Language Week. Information about language courses in Christchurch will be available and a petition calling for improved pronounciation of Maori word and to encourage more news media attention of issues can be signed.
