University teachers back student stand

The Association of University Teachers has joined students in condemning suggestions that university students be made to pay for their education. ■ The Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, has suggested that the userpays principle could be applied to universities. He said most universities students were from professional backgrounds and went on to well paid jobs because of their advanced education. The association believes that making students pay for their education would

make universities even more unbalanced.

“The imbalance in the student population has been caused in large part by the loss in the value of student assistance grants, which has placed an extra barrier before students from lower-income groups,” said the association’s president, Mr George Hill.

“The Government must redress the imbalance by reassessing its position on tertiary assistance grants, rather than seeking to move towards a user-pays philosophy,” he said.
