Air Force flies sick Chathams man to City

Chatham Island residents used their vehicle headlights to mark the runway for an R.N.Z.A.F. Friendship on an emergency medical evacuation mission last evening. The Air Force was called in after a Chathams man, aged 34, was diagnosed as having a suspected brain tumour. The Friendship left Wigram soon after 6 p.m. and took off from the Chathams with the sick man about 9.30 p.m. The crew had to cope with bad weather, includ-

ing expected head winds of up to gale force most of the way back. The aircraft was expected back at Christchurch about 1.30 a.m. Aboard the flight was Dr Terry Richardson, of the intensive-care unit at Christchurch Hospital, and an R.N.Z.A.F. nurse.

The doctor on the Chatham Islands, Dr Bev Wilson, said the man became ill yesterday and was in need of medical attention that could not be given on the island.
