History for deer hunters

The New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association has contracted the hunting writer, Philip Holden, to compile a 350-page history of the association for its fiftieth anniversary next year. ‘‘The golden jubilee book, ‘The Deerstalkers,’ would be a milestone in the organisation’s involvement with the administration of recreational hunting and shooting in New Zealand,” said the national president, Mr John Bamford, of Balclutha.

‘‘We see it as being a fitting tribute to New Zealand’s world reputation as a hunter’s paradise,” said Mr Bamford.

The author, Philip Holden, is one of New Zealand’s most prolific hunting and shooting writers. He has written 17 books. He will be at the New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association 1986 conference, which opened in Christchurch yesterday. Among the more notable speakers at the conference will be Dr Geoffrey Orbell, the association’s foundation national president in 1937. Dr Orbell is better known as the man who rediscovered the takahe, which he found in Fiordland in 1948. 1
