Bermuda flag up, then down
From KEVIN TUTTY in Edinburgh The team of eight Bermudan athletes who saw their national flag raised at a ceremony in the Games village on Wednesday were yesterday morning packing their bags to return home. The commandant of the Games village, Mr Cameron Cochrane, said that he received notice at 8 a.m. yesterday that Bermuda was the thirty-second team to withdraw from the Games. “I had a call from the manager of the Bermudan team to tell me that they
had been told by their Olympic association early this morning that they had to return home. They had pleaded with their Olympic association to allow them to stay and their case had been reconsidered, but their pleas were unsuccessful.” . Z Mr Cochrane said that yesterday morning,, there were 2080 competitors and officials in the village, 80 of whom f were athletes and officials from boycotting countries. He expected a maximum of about 2200 residents from 26 countries by the time the Games start today.
