Nearly 100 port staff to retire

Ninety-six waterfront workers at Lyttelton will retire early under an agreement reached between the Association of Waterfront Employers and the Waterside Workers’ Federation. The association now seeks volunteers in the 55 to 65 age-group to leave between August 4 and October 3. A spokesman said that if there were insufficient volunteers the association w’ould have to take the matter up with the Lyttelton Waterfront Workers’ Union.

The agreement provides for a reduction of 76 watersiders from the register of 512, 16 tally clerks from the register of 88, and four shipwrights from the register of 20. Nationally, up to 350 watersiders will lose their jobs. They will get an average severance payment of $25,000 each. This is based on a formula which is slightly better than the usual four weeks pay for the first year of service and two weeks for each subsequent year.
