United has incentive for victory

By DAVID LEGGAT The chance to make up for an early-season injustice should provide the perfect incentive for Christchurch Brother United when it meets University Cowan in a Rothmans Soccer League match at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Sunday. The teams met in Auckland in the fourth round and the United players and coach, Mr lan Marshall, felt they deserved at least a share of the points instead of a 1-2 defeat. That loss prevented United getting the strong, consistent start it wanted in the league, and now it must win on Sunday, and preferably by a good margin, to keep its prospects of winning the championship alive.

“I’m not too worried about winning well, just winning," said Mr Marshall.

“I do feel University was a bit fortunate to beat us, but you’ve got to respect a team that beat Miramar, 3-1, last weekend. And no team seems to have taken them apart this season.”

One player to keep an eye on will be University’s quicksilver striker, Alister Elder, who has achieved a

goal-a-game scoring rate in his limited appearances this season. But Mr Marshall has concerns of his own without thinking about the opposition.

Bobby Almond suffered a slight recurrence of his achilles tendon injury in last Sunday’s excellent 1-0 win in Manawatu, and the skilful mid-fielder, Chris Riley, will miss the match through suspension.

Should the' veteran sweeper not be fit, a tactical change will be forced on United. Mr Marshall will most likely opt to strengthen his mid-field and leave four defenders, which could mean a place for the Chilean, Carlos Villazon, who is fit again after a lay-off of several weeks.

The Hertz League title contenders, Andas Halswell United and New Brighton, both have difficult assignments tomorrow. Halswell will play Woolston W.M.C., which has the best record of any team in the competition over the last seven rounds; while Brighton, five points behind Halswell, will meet the defending champions, Budget House Rangers.
