Chatfield to remain on tour

NZPA staff correspondent London The medium-pacer, Ewen Chatfield, who has fractured a bone in his right thumb, will stay on the New Zealand cricket tour of England. That was decided yesterday after the receipt of a pessimistic specialist’s report which suggested Chatfield would be out of action until the third and final test of the series.

The original hope, voiced shortly after the Wellingtonian’s thumb was put in plaster a week ago, was that he would be fit for the match against Northamptonshire after the first test

Chatfield said after a team meeting that it had been decided he would see another London specialist for a second opinion next week. “The specialist I saw yesterday said it would be three weeks before I could bowl again. That means I should be available for the matches against Lancashire and Glamorgan which lead up to the third test,” he said.

The New Zealand captain, Jeremy Coney, said he wanted Chatfield to remain on tour rather than call for a replacement

“The ideal would be for him to take the plaster off in 10 or 12 days and have a go at bowling. If there was a reaction, he could go back into plaster,” he said.
