Catering King the star attraction

Catering King will be the star attraction at the Waikato Racing Club’s meeting at Te Rapa tomorrow when he goes for his fifth win on end in the Bolak Handicap. The big three-year-old meets his strongest opposition to date and with 56kg he will be conceding weight to all. But only a brave punter will back one to beat him.

Catering King’s sequence began at Matamata on May 13. He was successful next at Tauranga on June 21 and completed a hat-trick a week later at Avondale. Last time out Catering King tried 1400 m — the distance tomorrow — for

the first time and won well.

Catering King has the services of record-break-ing rider Lance O’Sullivan and though the defeat of Gatcombe’s Pride on Wednesday brought home the uncertainty of racing the combination should be a hot favourite.

There is plenty of form in the Bolak Handicap. Jade Maria, Blazing Fury and Allez Pal are laststart winners and Fortune’s Road, Fothers and Tipit all boast several recent minor placings. Many bettors will be anxious to square their accounts with So Regal, which has been a bit of a disappointment so far this winter.

Last Saturday’s Taumarunui Cup has taken its toll on the main middle-

distance race on the programme, the Radio Pacific Handicap. There are only a dozen acceptors and several have no place in a class one handicap. On the other hand, Maggie Bee and Joal, the first two home in the Cup, and both in the field and Run for Cover, the fifth placegetter, and by all accounts a shade unlucky, is also in the line-up. A newcomer which looks likely to run well is Ishbelle. She has been sparingly raced through the winter and her form is impressive. Ishbelle managed a sixth in that strong New Zealand Handicap field at Avondale two starts back, last time out she ran second to Count Fuego at Pukekohe.
