Scotland refuses to enlarge team
NZPA-AAP Edinburgh The host country, Scotland, has refused to enlarge its Commonwealth Games team to help make up the shortfall caused by the boycott by 31 of the 58 countries originally entered.
The Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland has rejected a request from the boxing team for permission to supply two extra Scottish boxers.
“This decision . was only aimed at boxing but it would be applicable throughout the Scottish team,” said Arthur Campbell, Scotland’s general team manager. “The quality of the Games is
more important than the numbers.”
The council’s ruling provoked an angry outburst from the Scottish boxing director, Frank Hendiy, who said: “The executive are completely out of order in refusing our request “The boxing entry is 65 per cent down due to the boycott and the situation is so grave that we asked all four home countries to consider bringing extra competitors. “Wales have promised to send another seven men If they obtain the blessing of their authorities, while Ireland have three standing by and England two more.
