‘Sailing Away’
Sir,—l am utterly turned off by the advertisement for New Zealand’s entry in the America’s Cup. Audiences at picture theatres groan when it comes on. Well they might The volume mounts to presumably patriotic levels, and the format from a fund-raising campaign to feed starving Africans is used to promote sporting glory — and the name of the commercial interest sponsoring it. You cannot turn your ears off, but you can close your eyes and wait till the tasteless hype billows off into the blue yonder to the strains of Pokarekare-ana. Amazing how handy Maoris are when it’s time for the nation to get all mistyeyed about unity. — Yours, etc.,
A. W. MCNAMARA. July 21, 1986.
