Classes smaller, report finds

PA Wellington Classes are getting smaller in State primary schools, according to figures from the Education Department. The figures in the department’s report to Parliament for the year ended March 31, 1986 show more classes with up to 19 and 20 to 24 children and fewer classes with more than 25 children.

The percentage of classes with up to 19 children rose from 16.7 in 1984 to 17.7 last year, and 20 to 24-children classes went from 14 to 16 per cent. While the number of classes with 25 to 29 and 30 to 34 children are dropping, they still make up the bulk of class sizes. There are 25.1 per cent of classes with 25 to 29 children (compared with 26 per cent in 1984) and 33.1 per cent with 30 to 34 children (34.8 per cent). Only seven classes had more than 40 children in them last year, as against 15 in 1984.
