Wedding day pay rise
NZPA-PA London The moment the Duke of York said “I do” he got a £6OO ($1680) a week pay rise. As a married man, his Civil List allowance — the Royal Family’s annual pay — will rise from £20,000 ($56,000) to £50,000 ($140,000).
The figure was fixed in 1972 under the Civil List Act which defined State payments to all the senior members of the Queen’s family, but is periodically adjusted. The Duke was the only one not to receive a rise last March when Parliament reviewed Royal pay; perhaps in anticipation of his forthcoming marriage. He first received the
payment of £20,000 in 1983 and has not had a rise since. In addition to the Civil List allowance, the Duke has a salary as a Royal Navy flier. As a lieutenant he received between £12,217 ($34,207) and £14,188 ($39,726) according to seniority, with an additional flying allowance between £1989 ($5569) and £3058 ($8562).
His new title does not bring any land or cash benefits.
From his total income the Duke will now have to provide for his wife, their public duty expenses, and the running costs of the new home the couple plan to buy outside London.
