Suspension reduced

The Riccarton jockey, Chris Johnson, has had a four-week suspension reduced as a result of an appeal to the Canterbury District Committee yesterday.

The judicial committee of the South Canterbury Hunt Club last Saturday suspended Johnson until after August 16 after he had admitted adding gear to his saddle after weighing out to ride Adios King in the Cobb Handicap at Washdyke. Johnson had weighed out at 51kg and when he was ordered to reweigh it was found that he was 0.75 kg over. Johnson yesterday appealed against the severity of the judicial committee’s penalty of four days of race-riding. He will now lose two days. The appeal committee advised Johnson of its concern that he had misled the clerk of scales, but considered that because he had admitted the charge and had not offended in that regard before the term of suspension should end after racing on August 2, the first day of the Grand National meeting at Riccarton. The South Canterbury Hunt Club’s judicial committee was criticised by the appeal committee for not inquiring about Johnson’s previous record. The appeal was 'heard by Mr John Fulton, Mr Viv Jack, and Dr Jeff Louisson.
