Dam badly built
A dam that burst in north-eastern, Italy last year, killing 269 people, was so badly built and maintained that its collapse was inevitable, according to a report on the tragedy. “The upper wall in particular had a poor foundation, was badly drained and already at breaking point,” said a report by a special investigating commission. The wall could not help but collapse under the slightest increase in pressure. The earthwork dam in the Fiemme Valley burst on July 19, engulfing the mountain hamlet of Stava in a-jfrall of mud.—Ronie.
