Night after night of sport

Sport from Britain takes over the community Network’s all night programme for the next 10 nights. Tonight it is cricket, the first day of the first test, England verus New Zealand, at Lord’s. Live commentary begins at 10 p.m. and continues until about 5.30 a.m. when there will be a commentary on the opening of the Commonwealth Games from Edinburgh. Tomorrow night, with the Games under way, commentaries will be taken from Lord’s and Edinburgh through the night.

Games events on the first night Include bowls, badminton, boxing, cycling, rowing, shooting, swimming and weight-lift-ing.

On Saturday night there is a similar mixture of cricket and Games sports, including the first day of track and field competition. The men’s 10,000 m will be run at about 5.30 a.m.

Sunday is a rest day in the test match but the Games continue, the highlight being the men’s 3000 m steeplechase. Anyone needing to sleep at night can hear Games reports at 6.15 a.m. and 11 p.m. on National and frequently on the commerical stations between 6.15 a.m. and 10.20 a.m.

Roger Hall’s “Glide Time” was a big success in the theatres almost 10 years ago and from it emerged the television and radio winner, “Gliding On.”

Hall started writing the first series for radio in 1977. Tonight the first programme in the final, 12-part series of the comedy can be heard on National at 8.05 p.m.

“Paul Robeson — Black Rights Rebel” on the Concert Programme at 9.25 p.m. on Sunday will attract both music lovers and students of recent American history.
