Envoy hopeful pulls out
NZPA-AP High Point, N. Carolina A black American businessman, Robert Brown, withdrew his name from consideration to be the next United States Ambassador to South Africa yesterday, saying he wanted to avoid more “painful” publicity. Mr Brown, aged 51, would have been the first American black to be Ambassador to Pretoria. He said earlier that he would accept the post if it was offered.
In a news conference yesterday, he said his family was the deciding factor. “It’s been hectic and very painful ... for myself and my family. I am not used to the limelight as such. I have avoided publicity most of my life — all of my life — and I don’t particularly like it. It’s nothing that I seek. I didn’t seek this and I won’t be seeking any publicity in the future.”
