Solid training gallop for Our Boyfriend
Special correspondent Hastings Our Boyfriend sped up a bit in training at Hastings yesterday morning, running a solid 1000 m on his own. The top stayer has been in work for several months but his trainer, Marlene Todd, has mainly restricted him to long, slow pacework. However, yesterday he ran 1000 m on the plough in 1:07.85, the last 600 m in 40.75. This was a respectable time as the ground was easy. Our Boyfriend is not expected to race for another month and there is a charice he may go to Sydney in the spring for the Metropolitan Handicap. Honour Bright (Treweek) was kept under a strong hold throughout 800 m in 59.65, the last 600 m in 44.25. He could be taken to Christchurch next week for a crack at the $40,000 Winter Cup.
Distant Shore (Treweek) was also restrained when completing 1000 m in 1:05.25, the last 600 m in 39.95. She is likely to step out at next week’s Hawke’s Bay Hunt meeting. Glen Aros, preparing for Saturday’s Rangitikei Hunt meeting, ran 1000 m on his own in 1:07.35, the last 600 m in 40s. Trainer Garnet Wood is a little concerned that the gelding has been given third topweight in the Hunt Cup Steeples at Wanganui, considering he is still a maiden. Nickleodeon (Waaka) ran 800 m, the last 600 m in 40.75, while his stablemate, Stand Easy, was timed to run the last 600 m of 800 m in 41.55. Two rising two-year-olds in Rose Durrant’s stable, one by Peymour and the other by Parkdale, came from the top of the home straight on the No. 1 grass in 275. The Peymour youngster is a half-brother to Tommo’s Tornado.
