Counties lucky to beat Waikato

PA Auckland The first division side, Counties, had luck on its side as it beat the second division team, Waikato, 21-17, in a non-champion-ship rugby match at Pukekohe yesterday.

John Boe was twice poised to kick Waikato to victory when his side trailed, 1718, in the last quarter.

But in the last minute Counties made a long break from its line, Waikato was penalised in front of its posts and Richard Fry delivered the final blow to Waikato with his second penalty goal. Counties, which led, 12-

11, at half-time, never hit top form. Although its forwards worked well and won plenty of possession, the passing of its backs was erratic and too many attacking chances were spoiled. In the end, Counties had to rely on the stalwart work of Alan Dawson, Murray Mclean and Mike Leach in the pack and the tidy play of Mark Moore at half-back to keep it out of trouble. Counties 21: A. Dawson, K. Ashby tries, W. McLean a penalty, R. Fry 2 penalties and two conversions.

Waikato 17: P. D’Aba (2), J. Mitchell tries; J. Boe a dropped goal, A Strawbridge a conversion.
