M.P. sets her limits on amalgamation

The member of Parliament for Lyttelton, Mrs Hercus, has set the record straight on what she could do to help residents concerned about the proposed amalgamation of local bodies in Christchurch.

Mrs Hercus was addressing at public meeting organised by the Heathcote Valley Community Association in the Heathcote Community Centre. “Many people seem to think that I can instruct or interfere with the work of the Local Government Commission that is dealing with the amalgama- , tion issue,” she said. “They also seem to think that I can organise a survey or influence the course of the decisionmaking in some other way.

"I cannot influence the work of an independent quango. I can assist local groups, including the Heathcote County Couiicil, to get their views across in terms of the various mechanisms and strategies available to them. “There are ways of doing that which I think are more clever than other ways and I’m happy to share my advice on this with anyone.” Mrs Hercus said she had yet to fully study the amalgamation proposals.

“I’m an M.P. who tries to be well briefed and will give my personal opinion further down the track,” she said.

Mrs Hercus encouraged the association to help organise more neighbourhood support groups in Heathcote.
