Mt Cook hostel plan approved
Timaru reporter
Approval for occupation of the Youth Hostels Association new hostel at Mount Cook will be given when work on a secondary stopbank on the Black Birch fan begins.
The Mackenzie County Council accepted the recommendations of a Government review of flood protection on the Black Birch fan recently after discussion with representatives of the Lands and Survey Dept, the Ministry of Works and Development, the Waitaki Catchment Commission, and the Youth Hostels
Association. Three main recommendations came from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Mr L. M. Kenworthy, of Christchurch. They were the immediate installation of a water-flow activated alarm system; the preparation in conjunction with the County Council of a civil defence plan for the fan; and the creation of the new stopbank to protect the residential area, instream maintenance work, and the raising of the top end of the primary stopbank to be started as soon as possible.
