Russians and N.Z.S.O.
Music by the Russian composers Glinka, Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky will be played by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra at the Christchurch Town Hall on Saturday.
The programme will include Glinka’s “Overture to Russian and Ludmilla,” Shostakovich’s “Violin Concerto, Op 99” and
Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony N 0.5.” The conductor will be Victor Yampolsky, who was born in Russia and who has studied music since the age of seven. He studied conducting with Nicolai Rabinovich and Yampolsky emigrated from the Soviet Union to the United States in 1973. A noted visiting violinist, Boris Belkin, will also
play with the orchestra. Belkin was also born in Russia but has since become a Belgian citizen. He has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras under conductors like Zubin Mehta, Leonard Bernstein, Riccardo Muti, Sir Charles Groves and Vladimir Ashkenazy. The performance will start at 8 p.m.
