Miners safe underground
On the way back to oiir new hotel, we caught sight of the winding tower of a coalmine shaft. Beneath old Tangshan, the ground is honeycombed with coal mine galleries. The 13,000 men underground in the earthquake were lucky. The tunnels moved as the earth’s structure swayed and jarred, but although Tights, ventilation, and cages were put out of action, most of the miners groped their way up inclined tunnels to the surface, beating underground flooding when pumps failed. The statistics tell an intensely human story. The earthquake produced 7000 widows and about 8000 widowers. Some of 4000 orphans were brought up by relatives, others went to live-in schools. #
