Mayor for S.A.
Officials on Sydney’s City Council are outraged that the Left-wing Lord Mayor, Mr Doug Sutherland, will visit South Africa next week. His decision to attend Johannes-, burg’s centennial celebrations from July 7 to 13 coincides with Federal Government discussions on possible sanctions against Pretoria. Mr Sutherland defended his trip and denied assertions by city aidermen that it would be seen as an endorsement of apartheid. “... let me make, it clear that . I am against the system of apartheid. I fully support calls for it to be dismantled and replaced by a completely democratic system,” he said. “The Johannesburg City Council is controlled by groups opposed to apartheid and the Government I do not believe my visit to South Africa can in any way be seen as condoning apartheid.”—Sydney.
