More than half Aust. deportees are Kiwis
NZPA-AAP Canberra Figures from the Department for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs show more than half of the people deported from Australia each year are New Zealanders. A department spokesman said New Zealanders were not screened before entering Australia, unlike other nationalities, probably accounting for the large proportion being deported. In 1984-85, 15 out of 21 deportees were New Zealanders and in 198384, 13 out of 24 deportees were New Zealanders. Meanwhile, a New Zealand man convicted of armed robbery will be deported on Friday and another, convicted of drug running, may already have left the country after decisions last month by the Administrative Anneals Tribunal.
