Views differ on confinement

Wellington reporter

What will life be like for Alain Mafart and Dominique Prieur on the remote Pacific atoll of Hao?

The issue emerged as one for rowdy contention when the Government and Opposition debated yesterday the transfer of the two agents out of New Zealand. National mocked the confinement as a comfortable stay on a South Sea Island, equating in

no way to the imprisonment the pair would otherwise have continued in New Zealand. Sir Robert Muldoon referred to confinement on the atoll as “going to a Club Med” where the pair could • enjoy a nightclub and bars. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, took issue with those images, at one point offering to pay a one-way fare for an Opposition member, Mr Don McKinnon, to go to Hao if he thought it would be so nice.

Mr Lange was confident Mafart and Prieur would stay on the atoll for three years and obey the terms of the confinement. He was also confident France would report on the pair every three months.

He emphasised Hao’s remoteness and a requirement that the pair hot mix with native inhabitants, of whom there were only about 100 anyway.
