North Harbour wins
PA Auckland Two converted tries in the last three minutes could not save the New Zealand Emerging Players from a 20-21 defeat by the second division side, North Harbour, at Onewa Domain yesterday.
Superbly led by Wayne Shelford, in his first appearance since the Cavaliers tour, North Harbour outpointed the Emerging
Players in every aspect of Play.
The composite team led, 4-3, at half-time, assisted by a slight wind, but the next 35 minutes belonged to the North Harbour pack. A penalty goal by Paul Feeney, after the All Black, Frano Botica, had left injured at halftime, was quickly followed by a slashing forward try by Gary Braid and Feeney’s conversion
to give North Harbour a 12-4 lead.
Another Feeney penalty seemingly put North Harbour clear of danger at 15-4, but the Emerging Players managed to run the ball properly and their full-back, Brent McKenzie, scored a longrange try. The Emerging Players needed Mark Benton’s conversion to stay in contact but the kick was missed.
