Mr Kirkland-Smith said the sale of his firm’s aluminium operations to Fletcher Challenge suited both companies. "Fletcher Challenge wanted a presence in the Waikato and we wanted out of aluminium which is very

competitive, especially when we didn’t have our own extrusion plant We also wanted to expand our glass operations,’’he said. Fletcher Challenge would retain the 25 aluminium staff involved, while Crystal Glass planned to lift its glass manufacturing capacity by September by installing a bigger furnace and taking on more staff.
