Name change for Leyland

NZPA-Reuter London The board of the Staterun British Leyland has voted to change the vehicle firm’s name to Rover Group pic, hoping the move will help the company shed its past association with failure. The decision was taken at an annual meeting in London. BL’s chief executive, Mr Graham Day, said the change would enable the company to get away from the legacies of the 1970 s and the name British Leyland. BL, and amalgamation of such British marks as Austin, Rover, Triumph and Land Rover, was saved from financial collapse by the Government In 1975.

Mr Day said there had been an overwhelming

positive response to the firm’s new Rover 800 cars. He said American dealers had asked for 30,000 Rover 800 s to be delivered next year. The Government shelved controversial plans In April to sell BL’s Land Rover and Freight Rover divisions to the U.S. vehicle giant, General Motors.
