Port’s draught to increase
Ships with ♦ a 12-metre draught will be able to visit the Port of Lyttelton once dredging work near Cashin Quay has finished. The dredge Peraki is expected to start work next week on the main channel leading to the quay, with the aim of increasing the draught to 12m. The increase will provide for some container vessels, bulk coal ships, and big deepladen tankers. Lyttelton can now handle ships with an 11.8 m draught, making it one of the deepest ports in New Zealand for general cargo vessels. The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s marketing manager, Mr Peter Morgan, said that one of the big advantages of the port was deep water. It was important that the board made the most of it Mr John Bushell, who is the board’s chief engineer, said that it was not certain how long the Peraki would take to dredge the channel to 12m. Its progress would be looked at in August or September. A dredging and dumping programme began at the port in 1969. In the last seven years, the depth of the channel had been increased by half a metre, he said. ARRIVALS Spirit of Competition (7 a.m.), 1600, Wellington (Pacifica).
