Speed limit inquiry terms
PA Wellington The chairman of Parliament’s Communications and Road Safety Select Committee, Mr Bill Jeffries, has announced terms of reference for the committee’s inquiry into the road safety implicaions of speed limits. The inquiry will review 12 months operation of the lOOkm/h open road speed limit introduced on July 1, 1985, to replace the 80km/h maximum.
The 1985 Road Safety Committee recommended to Parliament that speed limits be raised and that the Ministry of Transport should prepare a report after 12 months of the new limits. “The committee will advertise widely the terms of reference of Its inquiry, inviting submissions from interested parties,” Mr Jeffries said. The inquiry would include: an analysis of road accident trends in relation to speed limits, and an examination of the monitoring of speeds and the enforcement of speed limits by the Ministry of Transport.
