Kaiapoi may pay bus levy
Kaiapoi Borough might have to pay $73,380 as its share of transport costs in the Christchurch Urban Transport Area next year. The borough pays no transport rate, but makes up for this with higher fares. A paper prepared by the urban transport committee of the Canterbury United Council has recommended that all areas served by transport services should pay a levy.
The levy would be based on a formula which takes into account the population of a local authority, the length and num-
ber of bus trips into each area, and the extent to which buses are used for commuting to work. When this formula is applied to the financial requirements for transport services in the present year, Kaiapoi’s share would be $73,380, and nearby Rangiora would have to pay $113,885. Christchurch City which pays a Christchurch Transport Board rate of $5,832,372, would pay a levy of $5,198,316. Riccarton Borough and Waimairi District would also pay less if the levy were introduced.
