Cobra strikes back
A black cobra bit the director of Delhi Zoo after he shot it to protect a lioness and her three cubs. The director, Kamal Naidu, is in a serious condition in hospital because of a two-hour delay in administering antivenom serum. Mr Naidu shot the 152 cm snake through its stomach, but in an ensuing struggle to pin it down with a stick the cobra reared up and sunk its fangs into one of his hands. The lioness and her cubs were about to be moved from an open enclosure into the breeding cell, where the snake had taken refuge. — New Delhi.
