Indian leader dies
Jagjivan Ram, veteran leader of India’s untouchable community and a Cabinet Minister for nearly 30 years, has died. He was 78. Mr Ram died of chronic lung disease and pneumonia at a hospital where he was admitted on May 8. A member of nearly every national Government between 1947 and 1980, he was recently appointed as head of an advisory group to find a solution to Sikh-Hindu violence in Punjab. Mr Ram rose to become a leader of India’s Congress Party. He played a key role in toppling Indira Gandhi in 1977.—New Delhi
