Midwives’ fee rise aid to careers
PA Nelson A Government decision to increase by 50 per cent the fee paid for home births would allow more midwives to make a career out of home birthing, said the Domiciliary Midwives’ Association yesterday.
The national secretary of the Association, Ms Bronwen Pelvin, of Nelson, said the society applauded the Government’s intention to support planned home birth as a viable option for childbearing women. Despite the increase, domiciliary midwives would still earn well below hospital-employed
midwives, she said. There are 40 domiciliary midwives throughout New Zealand.
“The society has been trying since 1981 to get a significant and realistic increase to the fees payable to domiciliary midwives,” said Ms Pelvin.
The new fees meant a midwife attending 60 home births a year would earn $16,200 before tax.
