Win delights Helmut Kohl
NZPA-Reuter Hamburg
The West. German Chancellor, Helmut Kohl, expressed delight at Boris Becker’s second Wimbeldon triumph today. “It’s absolutely excellent,” said a beaming Kohl at the West German Derby in Hamburg. Kohl, attending the
country’s premier horse race with his wife, said he listened to the last 10 minutes of Becker’s match with the world No. 1, Ivan Lendl, on the car radio driving from Hamburg airport. "He’s an excellent young sportsman and he trained hard for 12
months for this great win,” Kohl said. A former Chancellor, Helmut Schmidt, also at the track, said Becker’s performance firmly established him as a worldclass player and buried doubts that his Wimbledon win last year might have been just a flash in the pan.
