Plans for new sales location under pressure
PA Auckland Plans to bring the multi-million dollar Trentham yearling sales to Auckland are on a tight deadline as South Auckland local bodies dispute the site.
Wrightson Bloodstock wants to build a $3 million sales pavilion next to the southern motorway at Papakura, in time for the January, 1988, sale. Wrightsons asked the Franklin County Council to change the zoning for the area and allow the development after rejecting other sites.
The Franklin Council has called for public submissions on the zone change and both the
Manukau and Papakura City Councils say they will object.
The planning process could take until March, 1987, if the objections are not overcome, giving Fletcher Construction less than the 12 months it wants to build the centre.
The sales pavilion is the first stage of a wider $lO million development Wrightsons have planned for (fee 35 hectare Hingaia 'Road site.
It will eventually accommodate 1000 potential buyers with stabling for as many horses. The company plans to hold as many as 20 horse sales every year once the yearling sale is established.
The Manukau city town planning department decided to object to the Hingaia Road proposal because of the detrimental impact on surrounding farmland and because it breaches the ARA district scheme.' Manukau has zoned land in Takaninl for the horse racing Industry and wants the centre built close to existing horserelated facilities.
