Sport Aid runs second to pop

NZPA-Reuter London A recent global fundraising extravaganza for African famine relief dubbed Sport Aid probably brought in about SUS2O million ($37 million), far less than the Live Aid pop music concerts last year, organisers have said.

Mr Nick Cater, spokesman for the Sport Aid event held in May, said SUS9.B million ($lB.l million) had been given in Britain so far and he expected the amount from the rest of the world to be about the same.

“We don’t have any clear picture yet but we

know it won’t be anywhere near Live Aid,” he said.

The event, led by the rock singer and Live Aid organiser, Bob Geldof, featured a series of athletic events worldwide culminating in a sponsored Race Against Time by more than 10 million people in 300 countries. Organisers said at the time they hoped the proceeds, to be shared by the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), would match the SUSIOO million ($lB5 million) raised by the Live Aid concerts in London and Philadelphia a year ago.
