Domiciliary midwives gain fee increase

PA Wellington The Government has approved a 50 per cent increase in fees paid to domiciliary midwives, the Minister of Health, Dr Bassett, said yesterday. The total payment for antenatal, delivery and postnatal services would rise from $lBO to $270 a case and be backdated to April 1, Dr Bassett said. Labour policy was to make the option of planned home birth freely

available but previous rates of pay had discouraged midwives from entering or remaining in practice. Domiciliary midwives would previously have earned up > to. about $12,600, but those working full-time should now be able to get between $16,000 and $19,000, he said. There were about 40 midwives now providing services, many on a parttime or intermittent basis.
