‘Ugetsu’ Japanese classic
“Ugetsu Monogatarl,” which has been acclaimed by “Sight and Sound” magazine as the tenth-best film of all time, will be screened by the Canterbury Film Society at 7.30 p.m. next Wednesday, at the Museum Theaterette, Rolleston Avenue. “The Oxford Companion to Film” comments: “One of the most perfect films in the history of Japanese cinema, ‘Ugetsu’ blends the traditions of Jidai-Geki with modem observation of human emotions and with (the director) Mizoguchi’s recurring study of trie contrasting destructive and redeeming aspects of woman’s love. “In spite of the importance of the supernatural in the story, Mizoguchi’s poetic approach never becomes fantasy: the quality of his vision is built up by the use ; of long-held camera set-ups, long shots, and gentle, deliberate movements, making a lyrical affirmation of humanity against a background of war and suffering- . ? “As in many of Mizoguchi’s films, the women are of vital importance, and the performances of Machiko Kyo, as the ghost princess, and Kinuyo Tanaka, as the potter’s wife, are of 'the highest quality.” j
