May tonnage down 30%

Tonnage handled at the Port of Lyttelton was down 30 per cent during May compared with May last year. The total quantity of cargo handled during May was 199,596 tonnes compared with 286,082 tonnes for the same month in 1985. The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s marketing manager, Mr Peter Morgan, said the decrease was caused by the lack of coal shipments during the month, combined with the low amount of petrol brought into the port. The total tonnage for the eight months of the board’s present financial year is down 20 per cent on the same period for last year. Mr Morgan said coastal cargo had been hardest hit by the downturn and because some shipping services had stopped calling at Lyttelton it was unlikely that coastal trade would pick up soon. The overseas cargo had also declined substantially, particularly in the export of bulk products and because of a smaller decrease in the volume of imports, he said.
