Farewell to arms
China’s arms factories plan to increase production of non-military goods to meet domestic demand and because of cutbacks in defence spending. The Minister Of Ordnance Industry, Zou Jinhua, said non-military goods would account for 70 per cent of output by 1990, up from 31 per cent now. The Ministry has plans for three factories to export plastic machinety, telephones and motor-cycles, and is negotiating with foreign firms to import technology to turn out heavy-duty trucks, tourist buses, paint, plastics and beer.
