Bach and rugby
Sir,—On Saturday afternoon (June 28) 22,500 at Lancaster Park enjoyed an exhilarating game of rugby. On Sunday afternoon approximately one fivehundredth of the attendance at the rugby test heard a lively concert of great music in Christchurch Cathedral.. Both entertainments commenced at 3 p.m. Both days were fine. The number of orchestral players was similar to that in a rugby fifteen. Admission to the concert cost less than being on the “bank.” How to divine the reason for the poor turnout on Sunday? Presumably people prefer back-play to the playing of Bach’s music. — Yours, etc., J. R. ALLISON. June 30, 1986.
