Pier parted
NZPA-Reuter London The Southend Pier was sliced in two yesterday by an out-of-control 645-ton coaster. The accident left the pier with “a dirty great gap,” said coastguards — and stranded anglers on the end. - Lifeboats went to the rescue of those trapped on the 2000 m pier, said to be the longest in the world. The sludge vessel sliced through quite close to the lifeboat house and ran aground on a mud bank about 100 m east.
