NZPA-AFP Washington The nuclear-propelled United States Navy air-craft-carrier, Enterprise, would have to sail round southern Africa to return to its base in California after Egypt banned it from using the Suez Canal, Pentagon sources said yesterday. The Enterprise and its two escort ships, also nuclear-driven, went through the Strait of Gibraltar on Saturday and set off down the African coast The journey to the Indian Ocean will now take about two weeks, compared with two days for the Suez route. Egypt, which as a general rule does not allow nuclear-propelled ships through the canal, made an exception in April after the United States bombing of Libya. Officials said the Enterprise was ordered to go round the Cape after Egypt asked Washington for a special payment of SUSSOO,OOO ($924,916) for allowing the warship’s passage in April. Washington thought that was too much and had not yet paid the money, the sources said.
