Trouble with trailers on pass
Some motorists who tried to tow trailers over Arthur’s Pass yesterday and on Monday got into difficulties and had to be towed through icy sections. The Otira policeman, Constable Philip Lynch, said last evening that he would advise motorists not to try to tow a trailer through the pass while conditions remained icy. Constable Lynch said that Otira’s garage closed 18 months ago, and so if a motorist got stuck it could cost $350 to get a tow truck to come from Greymouth to tow a vehicle clear. Arthur’s Pass is open, but chains are essential, according to the Automobile Association last evening. Lindis Pass was also open, with snow on the road and chains essential, while Lewis Pass was open and clear last evening.
