MINISTERIAL COMMITTEE OF ENQUIRY INTO POSSIBLE HEALTH EFFECTS OF THE MANUFACTURE OF AGRICULTURAL CHEMICALS IN NEW PLYMOUTH OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE SUBMISSIONS THE Minister of Health, Hon. Dr Michael Bassett, set up, on June 24, 1986, a Ministerial Committee of Enquiry into the possible health effects on New Plymouth residents of the manufacture of agricultural chemicals in New Plymouth, particularly 2,4,5-T and excluding fertilisers. The membership of the Committee is Professor Geoffrey Brinkman, Chairman, recently retired Dean of the Medical School, University of Otago, Professor Dick Matthews, Department of Cell Biology, University of Auckland and Dr Brian Earle, Reader in Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Canterbury. The Committee’s terms of reference are as follows: 1. To advise the Minister of Health whether the manufacture of pesticides, as defined in the Pesticides Act 1979, (and in particular 2,4,5-T) in New Plymouth has had, or is likely to have, any effect upon the health of the residents of New Plymouth. 2. To comment on the findings of recent reports in New Zealand relating to pesticides in so far as these are relevant to the health of the residents of New Plymouth. The reports to be considered shall include: (1) Nicol R.S. and Smith D.K.W. “Investigation of Bursting Disc Failure Ivon Watkins Dow TCP Process” DSIR Report No. IPD/RI/ 1658, Wellington, June 1986. (2) Task Force on Chronic Agricultural Chemical Poisoning Notification Report to the Director-General of Health — Wellington: June 1986. N.Z. Dept of Health. (3) Environmental Council Working Party “Report on the Use of 2,4,5-T in New Zealand" Environmental Council, Wellington (pending) (4) and such other material as the Committee may deem appropriate. 3. To review the effectiveness of present surveillance methods in protecting the health of the residents of New Plymouth and to advise the Minister of Health of what further action (if any) should be taken to ensure that their health is not adversely affected by the manufacture of pesticides in New Plymouth. 4. To advise the Minister of Health of any other relevant matters which are found during the enquiry. The Committee Invites submissions from people and organisations who wish to make their views known on matters relevant to the terms of reference. The closing date for written submissions, which should be sent to the Committee’s secretariat, is July 25, 1986. The Committee will be hold oral hearings in New Plymouth on August, 5,6, 12, 13. These hearings will be informal in character. People and organisations who wish to make oral submissions are asked to advise the Committee secretariat by July 15. Paparua I County Council ANNUAL WATER RACE CLEANING NOTICE is hereby given that all water races controlled by the Paparua County Council will be turned off on the following dates to' enable landowners and occupiers to carry out cleaning and other essential maintenance works. 1. SANDY KNOLLS RACE Monday, July 7, and Thursday, July 10, 1986 and thereafter on Monday and Thursday of each week until Thursday, August 7,1986 and also on Saturday, August 9 and 16, 1986. 2. WEST MELTONWEEDONS RACE Tuesday, July 8, and Friday, July 11, 1986, and thereafter on Tuesday and Friday of each week, until Friday, August 8, 1986, and also on Saturday, August 23, and 30, 1986. Landowners and occupiers are reminded of their obligation to clean the races through their respective properties and also to CUT ALL FENCES AND REMOVE ALL GORSE, BROOM AND OTHER ■ GROWTH OVERHANGING ALL RACES, including those cleaned by the Council. All fence trimmings must be removed immediately from the races. This requirement applies throughout the whole system, that Is throughout the ■■ PAPARUA, ELLESMERE AND WAIMAIRI RACE SUPPLY SYSTEM. FaUure to adequately clean races by September 30, 1986 will result in action being taken by the Council. Action will be taken against those persons whose gorse, broom and other growth Interfered with the Council's cleaning contract.
