Albatross at Shirley
John ' Williamson has played many memorable golf shots in a distinguished career for Canterbury, but not many have given him more satisfaction than his No. 2 wood approach shot to the ninth green at Shirley on Sunday. Williamson, on his home course, was playing a stroke competition against the Canterbury match-play champion, Kerry Lake, in a ladder ranking match played among members of the representative training squad. Hitting off the blue tees,
Williamson was some 230 m from the par-5 hole after his drive, but his No. 2 wood shot was timed to perfection, the ball landed on the green and took one bounce into the hole. Except for a hole-in-one at the Ascot par-3 course, it was the first albatross for Williamson, a member of the 1984 New Zealand Eisenhower Trophy team. Lake, who paired the hole, was not too impressed at conceding three strokes at the one hole and, not surprisingly, was still in arrears at the finish.
